Rodrigo and Jamie’s Wedding – This One Takes the Cake!

Both Jamie and Rodrigo’s hearts had been broken and both were uncertain if they could ever allow themselves to be that vulnerable again. But, secretly, they both harboured the hope that ‘The One’ would someday come along.

They came cross each other online, by accident! Jamie, in the lead-up to his trip to Cuba, was looking for information on accommodation and restaurants in Havana and Rodrigo, having studied there, replied with some first class tips. They corresponded and arranged to meet up in Mexico when Jamie was on his way to Cuba.

The first time they met in person was at Cancún airport. Jamie was anxious that Rodrigo might have trouble getting through immigration so it was with (great) relief that he eventually saw him heading his way. Rodrigo’s first comment was (with a big smile on his face) – “You are very tall” and Jamie’s was “you are so handsome!” And with that Jamie received his first lecture on love from Rodrigo and the parameters for the growth of their relationship, and the values that were to play key roles in it, were laid down. His lecture went along the lines of: ‘Good looks can fade, but a good heart is much more important and keeps you beautiful forever! The best and most beautiful things in the world can’t be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart.’ This resonated with Jamie and the foundations of a very deep and fulfilling bond were established.

They had a wonderful few days in Mexico and Jamie decided to ask Rodrigo if he would join him on his trip to Cuba. Rodrigo said yes. He tells me, “the moment I saw Jamie’s eyes I knew, this man is the love of my life.” He wanted to know more about this ‘tall man’.

Cuba was a huge success, they talked a lot about travel and their interests and at the end of their time in Cuba the conversation was turning towards where their futures might lie.

It was a 10 hour bus trip from Havana to Camaguey where Rodrigo was studying. Jamie was already taking Spanish classes but he was about to be tested to the extreme limits of his knowledge. For 10 hours straight they talked. About absolutely everything. And by the end of the bus trip they had agreed to get married – to each other! Not the most romantic of spots to accept a proposal but most certainly a very romantic moment for them both. But their love was about to be tested… exhausted they checked in to their hotel for the night only to find it was infested with mosquitos! Rodrigo claims Jamie was responsible for choosing it and exclaimed “I am only here because I love you!!” The pair of them spent the next 2 hours exterminating the pests but still had to tolerate the continuous zummmzummm of a few survivors!

So where does the cake come into it? Well Rodrigo is a Master Cakemaker and decorator, having trained internationally with the best in the world! Yes! WE have someone this talented in Perth! Of course Rodrigo made and decorated their magnificent wedding cake and it was the star of the show… and super delicious! Check it out for yourself, he makes birthday cakes too 🙂
